  11. <p>   Climate and clothing: Summer clothing is suitable year round
  12. in Sri Lanka. Sweaters may be needed in the country's central
  13. highlands. Wash-and-wear clothing is best as there is little
  14. drycleaning outside Colombo. Toiletries, cosmetics, and
  15. photographic supplies are available locally, though expensive.

  17. <p>   Visas and customs: U.S. citizens do not need visas to enter
  18. Sri Lanka for up to 30 days. Consult a physician for
  19. recommended inoculations, such as cholera and gamma globulin.
  20. Foreign currency, including travelers' checks, must be declared
  21. upon entry. Visitors should keep currency exchange receipts. On
  22. departure, they will be asked to show evidence of authorized
  23. exchange.

  25. <p>   Health: Public health facilities in Sri Lanka are poor. The
  26. U.S. Embassy maintains a list of private physicians who may be
  27. consulted in emergency cases. Medical supplies are scarce, so
  28. bring any special drugs required. Malaria is endemic outside
  29. Colombo. Outside the capital, take a malaria suppressant.
  30. Tapwater is often not potable. Avoid drinking unboiled water.
  31. Unpeeled, raw fruits and vegetables or undercooked meats also
  32. should be avoided.

  34. <p>   Telecommunications: All hotels have telephones. Domestic
  35. telephone source is fair. Long-distance service is good and may
  36. be booked through an operator in advance. International
  37. direct-dialing is available from most major hotels. Telegraph,
  38. cable, and FAX service is good and available 24 hours a day in
  39. Colombo. International airmail service to the United States
  40. takes about 2 weeks. Sri Lanka is l0-l/2 hours ahead of eastern
  41. standard time.

  43. <p>   Transportation: Colombo is served by several international
  44. airlines; none are U.S.
  45. </p>
  46. <p>   All parts of the island may be reached by rail or by bus,
  47. however, most foreign visitors hire a vehicle for travel outside
  48. Colombo. Rates are reasonable. Cheap taxi service, some metered,
  49. is readily available in Colombo. Traffic moves on the left.
  50. </p>
  51. <p>   Tourist attractions: Sri Lanka has many sights, both
  52. archaelogical and scenic, well worth visiting. The island has
  53. been called the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean." Contact travel
  54. agencies for detailed information. Major hotels are moderately
  55. priced. Inexpensive but adequate hotels also are available
  56. throughout the island. Sightseeing tours can b easily arranged.

  58. <p>   Travel advisory: Violence in the north and east as well as
  59. parts of the south make it important for all U.S. visitors to
  60. contact the Department of State before departure and the U.S.
  61. Embassy on arrival.

  63. <p>   Holidays: Many holidays are religious observances based on
  64. the lunar calendar; dates vary from year to year. All full moon
  65. days-"poya" days-also are public holidays.
